Why medicine is a little unsatisfying…

“Maybe the present is a little unsatisfying because life is a little unsatisfying”

Woody Allen,
“Midnight in Paris”

One of my all-time favourite movies.

I totally get caught up in the nostalgia of that movie – hanging out with the writers and artists of the 1920s, in Paris…

…which is interesting because that movie is all about not being nostalgic.

There are so many incredible quotes in that movie. I love to just pull them apart and seeing how they apply to life.

Like the one above.

So true, especially for many doctors.

So many are unsatisfied with where they are in life.

They’ve achieved a lot, they’ve hit all their goals and are comfortable, but still, life isn’t quite what they want it to be.

Their life is great, but it’s just a little unsatisfying.

Then they get the crazy idea that maybe, just maybe, starting a business will make it more rewarding and exciting.

They’ve heard a story about some guy who came up with an idea and now he’s on all the magazine covers and sitting on some tropical island drinking margaritas surrounded by beach babes.

Well, let me pop that bubble right now like a surgeon slicing into a boil.

If that’s what you’re looking for, business won’t help.

Business is not a better way or an easy way out.

It’s just as mildly unsatisfying and extremely difficult as medicine.

It takes as much, if not more, effort and risk.

In fact, you’d have to be pretty damn bonkers to do it.

So if you’re just mildly unsatisfied in medicine thinking that maybe business will help, it won’t. You can stop that thought right now.

As the quote says, life is mildly unsatisfying.

BUT, if you want to use business to change an industry, help a lot of people, solve some interesting problems, make a dent in the universe, and you’re still reading this…
